Germany’s rail infrastructure will undergo extensive construction and maintenance works over the coming years, significantly affecting key European freight corridors. While these investments are essential for long-term rail performance, they present major short- and medium-term challenges for intermodal and combined transport operators across Europe.
This Intermodal Transport Network (ITN) webinar, organised by EPCA’s Supply Chain Committee, will focus on how infrastructure works are planned, managed and mitigated, and what this means concretely for rail operators, logistics providers and chemical shippers relying on stable rail capacities.
The webinar will start with an update from Deutsche Bahn on the current and upcoming infrastructure works in Germany, including how rail capacity, operations and maintenance activities are balanced during long-term construction phases.
Building on this, the session will feature a practical case study on successful intermodal corridor management, focusing on how operators can organise effective bypass solutions during major corridor closures – for example on routes such as Passau–Nuremberg, which are critical for East–West combined transport flows.
The discussion will highlight what is needed in practice to ensure continuity of intermodal services: coordination between infrastructure managers and operators, alternative routings, international cooperation, and the role of terminal and traction partners across borders.
This webinar is particularly relevant for shippers, logistics service providers, rail operators, infrastructure managers and policy stakeholders involved in European combined transport.

Major rail infrastructure works in Germany will continue for several years, putting pressure on intermodal supply chains across Europe. This ITN webinar brings together infrastructure managers and rail operators to explore how to maintain reliable intermodal operations despite long-term corridor closures.
